The chair of the House of Commons transport committee is calling for Sunwing Airlines and Via Rail to publicly explain what caused the travel disruptions that affected thousands of Canadians over the holidays.
MP Peter Schiefke posted on Twitter, his plans to convene a committee meeting and call for representatives from both companies to appear as witnesses.
He says Canadians deserve answers for “unacceptable delays and cancellations.”
A spokesperson for Via Rail says the company would “respond favourably” to a committee request.
Sunwing Airlines meantime, continues to be criticized by passengers who’ve suffered through cancelled flights, lost luggage and endured sleeping on airport terminal floors.
Duncan Dee is former chief operating officer at Air Canada and an occasional guest on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer.
He says at the very least, Sunwing should provide compensation.
“The airline can resort to insurance claims on their own, but this is really a cost of doing business,” Dee explains.
A statement from Sunwing says all its stranded passengers are now back in Canada and is advising those impacted by the problems to submit a claim for compensation or a refund of up to one-thousand dollars.
