An Ontario Mom is speaking out after her child was transferred to a hospital about 350 kilometers from their home.

Stephanie Rutherford says her four-year-old son Remy was airlifted to Kingston General three weeks ago after being treated at a hospital in Simcoe until his symptoms worsened.

“At that point we didn’t know what was wrong with him or what we were looking at, and the doctors were saying that I had not called 911 when I did, not that he could be dead but that he would be,” said Stephanie.

Remy was diagnosed in Kingston with  Strep A, leading to him  becoming septic and his organs were impacted.

Meantime Health Minister Sylvia Jones commented on the family’s experience.

“It’s not ideal as a family to have a child that far away, but it is also important to appreciate that by doing that air transport, that child was able to be assessed and treated soon.”

Stephanie Rutherford is thankful for her son’s eventual treatment but is speaking out because she’s dismayed they had to travel so far for care.

Kingston was the closest hospital with an open bed.
