A spokesperson for Ontario’s Attorney General says the province is reviewing a court ruling that struck down the Ford government’s  Bill 124.

Andrew Kennedy says “our intention is to appeal.”

Unions are responding to the Ontario Court’s decision to strike down the law that caps wage increases for some public sector workers at 1%.

S-E-I-U Healthcare President Sharleen Stewart says her members are feeling respect and dignity after this ruling.

“It’s a good day for all of them, they’re feeling like heroes today, and we’ll take the next steps to make sure the workers are taken care of, hopefully this will bring back some of those healthcare workers who felt so disrespected over this bill and the treatment they received, and we can get back to negotiations and again, give them the wages and benefits that they deserve.”

Stewart isn’t ruling out action to secure back pay for her members.

“We’re going to consult with out lawyers and take one step at at time,” says Stewart. “Doug Ford better not waste anymore taxpayer money fighting this fight against workers’ rights to bargain.”

Justice Markus Koehnen says the law infringes on the applicants’ rights to freedom of association and collective bargaining. But the Ford government argued the law did not infringe constitutional rights and was a time-limited approach to help eliminate the deficit.

Critics say the wage restriction is partly to blame for the staffing crisis in Ontario hospitals.
