Following a spike in complaints, municipal council members in Brampton, Ontario adopted a recommendation for a ban on residents’ use of personal pyrotechnics.
The city’s current bylaw will be changed by the new prohibition, which was passed by council members during a late-night public hearing on Monday, to outright forbid the usage and sale of fireworks.
The prohibition does not apply to city-run activities or the film industry.
The motion was seconded by Councillor Guratap Singh Toor, who said that the issue was “heard loud and clear, even throughout the election campaign.”
Only short-range fireworks, defined as those that travel no farther than three metres, were formerly permitted on private property in Brampton on Victoria Day, Canada Day, Diwali, and New Year’s Eve.
Prior to the vote, none of the speakers at delegations spoke in favour of the prohibition.
