The world’s largest dam demolition and river restoration plan could become a reality as U.S. regulators decide whether to approve the removal of four ageing structures, reopening hundreds of miles of California river to endangered salmon.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission vote on the lower Klamath River dams on Thursday is the final major regulatory hurdle and the most significant milestone for a $500 million demolition proposal championed for years by Native American tribes and environmentalists.

For the first time in more than a century, the project would restore the lower half of California’s second-largest river to free flow.

However, some homeowners are concerned that demolition will reduce property values and that project overruns will fall on taxpayers.
