If you remember the fund raising for the famine in Ethiopia in the mid 80s, you’ll remember Bob Geldof, the the Irish musician who spearheaded the effort, and if you remember all that, you’ll remember his band the Boom Town Rats.

We’re hearing the band’s guitarist and founding member Garry Roberts has died.

Sir Bob formed the Boomtown Rats in Dublin in 1975.  A statement from the band says Roberts was instrumental in settling on the name Boomtown Rats after he threatened to quit unless they ditched their original name, “The Nightlife Thugs.”

Geldof tweeted Roberts was a friend who will be remembered for a sound that will never been forgotten.

Garry Roberts was 72.
