Canada is imposing a new round of sanctions, targeting Russia’s media machine in a bid to puncture disinformation campaigns about the war in Ukraine.
Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly says the new list of sanctions is designed to combat lies being peddled by Russia and its state-sponsored media about the invasion of Ukraine.
Canada is sanctioning Russian news agencies, journalists and TV stations, including the news agency RT, which has already been banned from Canada’s airwaves.
The sanctions come as Ottawa launched a web page correcting Russian disinformation about the invasion of Ukraine and countering it with facts, using declassified material.
Global Affairs Canada says the site will be continually updated to shed light on how the Russian regime is telling lies to justify the invasion.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 1,150 people and organizations in Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.
