Someone in Salem Massachusetts has vandalized a statue honouring the star of a popular 1960’s TV sitcom.

In the wiggle of a nose, a man covered the bronze Bewitched statue with red paint. It depicts actor Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stephens sitting on a broomstick in front of a crescent moon.

Police arrested and charges a 32-year-old resident of the area. The statue –erected in 2005 – has already been cleaned.

His motivation remains unclear.

Elizabeth Victoria Montgomery was an American actress whose career spanned five decades in film, stage, and television.

But she’s  best remembered for her leading role as the witch Samantha Stephens on the television series Bewitched.  She died in 1985.
