The world’s number one men’s tennis player remains confined to an immigration detention hotel in Australia while awaiting a court ruling of if he can defend the Australian Open later this month.
Novak Djokovic, a vocal skeptic of vaccines, received a medical exemption before leaving for the country.
But when the 34-year-old arrived, border authorities rejected the exemption.
A court hearing is set for Monday.
The tournament begins a week later.
Its director defends the application process as completely legitimate, insisting Djokovic did not receive any special treatment.
26 people connected with the tournament applied for a medical exemption, and Craig Tiley says only a ”handful” were granted.
Acceptable reasons for an exemption include major medical conditions and serious reactions to a previous dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
