Canada’s athlete of 2021 is Olympic decathlon champ Damian Warner.
The 32-year-old London, Ontario native has captured the Lou Marsh Trophy after a record-setting performance in Tokyo, where he led after all 10 events, becoming just the fourth ever to break the 9,000-point mark.
He was Canada’s flag-bearer for the closing ceremony.
Warner beat out sprinter Andre De Grasse, swimmer Maggie Mac Neil, soccer players Stephanie Labbe and Alphonso Davies, Oilers’ captain Connor McDavid and Blue Jays Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who was born in Montreal.
After Marsh’s history of racism and antisemitism while he was a reporter, recently came to light, some began calling for the award to be renamed.
The Toronto Star is launching a ”comprehensive study” of his career to determine if that should be done.
