The province is investing $75 million over three years to crack down on guns and drugs.
Premier Doug Ford says violent crime has not let up during pandemic.
“Let me put it into perspective, in just a year’s time, the number of street gangs involved in the opioid market doubled, and then it tripled when it comes to the methamphetamine market,” said Ford. “It’s not just drugs that are a problem but guns remain a huge problem for communities all across Ontario.”
Ford says the money will create an office of illicit drug intelligence, a new gun and gang mobile prosecution unit, and a provincial database of gun and gang activity.
