The deputy prime minister has fired a letter off to the chair of Air Canada’s board of directors, urging that its CEO Michael Rousseau learn to speak French and that his knowledge of the language be included in his annual performance review.
Chrystia Freeland’s also asking that the knowledge of French should become a key criteria for promotions at the airline.
The letter follows the controversy raised last week by Rousseau’s mostly English speech to the Montreal Chamber of Commerce.
Afterward, he told reporters he’d been too busy to learn French and that he had not trouble living there for 14 years.
Freeland says she was writing to Rousseau’s boss to express the government’s ”disappointment” in his remarks and English-only speech.
Rousseau apologized last week and said he planned to improve his language skills.
”I would like to be able to speak French.  I want to make it clear that in no way did I mean to show disrespect for Quebecers and Francophones across the country,” he said in a statement.
