It’s likely an indication of what’s to come in Ontario.

British Columbia’s medical officer of health has announced booster doses of COVID-19 vaccine will be offered to all double vaccinated residents of that province at least six months after their second dose.

On Tuesday, Dr. Bonnie Henry said that as of January a booster dose of either Pfizer or Moderna vaccine would be offered to British Columbians aged 12 and over who have already received their second dose.

“Our vaccines are highly effective. However, we are starting to see a gradual decline in protection over time,” Henry said. “As a result, we are taking the proactive step of expanding boosters to everyone in our province.”

B.C. becomes the first jurisdiction in North America to announce a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine to the general population.

Until now, British Columbia had followed other Canadian provinces and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control in offering the third dose only to those in long-term care facilities, seniors and those in high-risk settings or who are immuno-compromised.
