A mobile hairdressing service in the GTA that specializes in seniors is on the road again after the pandemic forced it to hit the brakes.

Haircuts on Wheels is giving older clients much more than just a haircut.

“This market really needs us,” says owner Kimberly Irwin, who started the company 12 years ago for first for children, but she quickly saw a need for seniors still living in their own home, nursing or retirement home or in hospital.

“Very quickly I learned that I didn’t know how to shampoo people’s hair who were in a wheelchair or who were bed-ridden and I really had a lot of figuring out to do but it’s such a beautiful market and they need our help, so really our service is about delivering care.”

Client Jeff Edwards lives with his 88-year-old father Donald who was hospitalized for almost a year after suffering a head injury from a fall and then pneumonia. When released in 2018, Donald was weak.

“It would be very hard for him to get inside a barber shop, stand up, sit down, so we looked for Haircuts on Wheels, they don’t just do haircuts, they do pretty much anything.”

“Someone asked me one time why is it so special and I feel like you become really close quickly because it’s just the two of you together for that one-on-one time,” Kimberly remarked. “We’ve touched a lot of hearts.”

The company employs 15 stylists with their own cars and serves an area bound by Whitby, Burlington, the lake and Markham.
