Mary Simon takes over as Canada’s next governor general, and first Indigenous person to serve in the role, July 26.
She was Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s choice to be the Queen’s representative in Canada.
The appointment comes as First Nations grieve and Canadians generally are angry over the historic and current treatment of Indigenous people after recent discoveries of unmarked graves at sites of former residential schools.
Simon will replace Julie Payette, who resigned in January after an independent review found Rideau Hall had become a toxic workplace.
There’s speculation the prime minister could visit soon after she takes office, and recommend she dissolve the minority Parliament, sending Canadians to the polls.
