He’s being remembered as Jimmy Carter’s Vice President and in 1984 the first man to run for U.S. president with a female running mate.

Walter “Fritz” Mondale has died at his home in Minneapolis.

The current president, Joe Biden, memorialized Mondale calling him a “dear friend and mentor,” adding it was Mondale who defined the vice presidency as a full partnership and helped provide a model for his service as Vice President under Barack Obama.

Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro lost the 1984 president election to Ronald Reagan George H. W. Bush.

Walter Mondale was 93.
