Amanda Gorman, the United States’ first-ever youth poet laureate, recited a powerful poem at the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The 22-year-old recent Harvard graduate summoned images dire and triumphant as she called out to the world “even as we grieved, we grew.”
She read with urgency and assertion, at times echoing the words of John F. Kennedy and the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr, in her poem The Hill We Climb.
Gorman says she completed a little more than half of the poem before the January 6th siege of the U-S Capitol but says that event gave her a second wave of energy to finish the poem.
Just hours after reciting the moving poem, the young poet tweeted at the creator of the blockbuster musical HAMILTON, telling Lin-Manuel Miranda she couldn’t help but reference the musical in her poem. He responded with “you were perfect!”
