Some teachers took to social media after Thursday’s announcement that the province is hiring 200 new OPP officers at a cost of $25 million dollars.

Doug Ford reacted to some educators who say share the wealth and hire more teachers too.

“I don’t like the idea of comparing apples and oranges, two separate groups,” said Ford.

“Every board is responsible to hire their teachers, we put $30 million forward.”

Ford also challenged the teachers to step up like others have including grocery store clerks, police, fire, EMS and truck drivers.

When asked if he’d access reserve funding to make sure testing is available near schools. Ford said “we’re ready for those spikes.”

The new funding for the OPP comes at at time when some are calling for defunding police.

Solicitor General Sylvia Jones says the new hiring takes into account the mental health of police and certain parts of the province facing chronic understaffing.
