The Toronto Police Services Board has approved a $1.076 billion operating budget for 2020 It represents a $40 million, or 3.9 percent increase over the 2019 budget. Among other items, the extra money will pay for an additional 341 more officers and a move to a new shift model. Mayor John Tory says taxpayers will understand it’s time to invest more now and other years will be less. Both Tory and Police Chief Mark Saunders say the budget is fiscally responsible in a growing city. The 2020 operating budget goes before city council in January for approval. Also at Monday’s Police Services Board meeting, a draft policy was presented that recommends Toronto police start tracking and reporting the race of individuals involved in encounters with police officers.
