The Mars InSight lander is on its way to the red planet.

The Atlas V rocket lifted the spacecraft off the launch pad Saturday morning at California’s Vandenberg Air Force Base, put it into a temporary orbit around Earth, then sent it on its 485 million lilometre (300 million miles) journey.

The trip will last over six months.

The early morning launch of Mars InSight was shrouded in heavy fog; so much so that spectators who came out to watch the spacecraft could hear the roar and feel the rumble, but they couldn’t see it.
