Some children will be getting healthier treats this year for Halloween.
There’s a trend in some communities across Canada to hand out healthier alternatives to the usual candies, mini chocolate bars and chip bags.
In Stratcona County near Edmonton, the Halloween pass program has been a big success. Instead of munchies, kids are given passes to go swimming or skating, and in some cases even skiing.
The county printed 25-thousand booklets with 10 tickets each this year. The booklets sell for five dollars.
The City of Cornwall, Ontario has a popular program with skating and swimming passes that began in 2012.
Fans of the programs say kids still get candies at a lot of doors so they don’t miss out on that altogether.
