The small island of Barbuda in the eastern Caribbean was devastated by Hurricane Irma, but actor Robert De Niro is determined to get it back on its feet.
The 74 year-old Hollywood legend and a group of investors were in the process of developing a 200-million dollar luxury resort hotel on Barbuda, and will now direct some of their efforts into rebuilding the severely damaged island which is part of the twin island nation of Antigua and Barbuda.
De NIro says he’s been coming to the islands since he was in his twenties.
It was also a favourite vacation destination for Princess Diana and her sons, Princes William and Harry.
De Niro’s Paradise Found Nobu Resort will be built on the former site of the luxury K Club resort, Princess Di’s favourite.
Damage to Barbuda from Hurricane Irma was so intense, that the entire population of just under 2,000 has been taken to Antigua until the cleanup and rebuilding can begin.
De Niro says that in spite of the setback caused by Irma, he’s determined to see the island recover. He says his dedication to Barbuda goes beyond ensuring that his own venture moves forward.
