Tensions were high in Charlottesville, Virgina on Saturday when members of the Ku Klux Klan and some supporters demonstrated against the city’s plan to get rid of a statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee.

The removal of the statue of the South’s Civil War hero is part of the city’s plan to lower its number of Confederate monuments.

With some wearing their KKK robes and carrying Confederate flags, members of the Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan demonstrated in front of Lee’s statue.

Counter-protestors tried to shout them down as local and state police set up barriers.

Police escorted the Klan protestors to a designated area, Justice Park,  for their demonstration.  Until recenty the park had been named after another Confederate hero, General Stonewall Jackson.
