A leading expert has issued a dire warning for Canada. Dr. James Orbinski from the University of Toronto says Canada has quote “missed the boat” on climate change. He described it as the greatest global threat to health of the 21st century. Orbinski says we lag behind other countries that have developed renewable resources to reduce global warming. He spoke in Vancouver Monday at a gathering of the Canadian Medical Association, suggesting the CMA create a standing working group to deal with the issue and have a clear responsibility to focus on the health impacts of climate change. He said California’s decision to put a price on carbon emissions means it has the fastest-growing economy in the United States. Orbinski, who headed Doctors Without Borders when it won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1999, urged doctors to get involved locally in developing climate-change policies. In 2011, he says 13 million east Africans were on food assistance because of drought.
