A wine cellar that Italian dictator Benito Mussolini converted to an air raid shelter is now open for tourists.

The wine cellar was in a Rome villa owned by a noble family, and was taken over by the fascist ruler.

The shelter has an iron-rung ladder for use as an emergency exit, and a mechanism that could purify air if there was a gas attack.

The city of Rome now owns the villa, and the mayor toured the shelter Saturday.  Tourists can make reservations to have a look at the shelter beginning October 31st.

There’s also a reinforced-concrete bunker under the villa that can be toured as well.
