Signing up to become an organ donor in the U.S. may get more complicated than checking a box on a driver’s license because the government is preparing to regulate the new field of hand and face transplants just as it does the transplantation of other organs.

One of the challnges facing the government is how people can consent to donationg body parts and perhaps not include faces or hands.

Dr. Suzanne McDiamind, the chair of the United Network for Organ Sharing’s committee that will develop appropriate policies over the next few months says there’s a risk of undermining public trust if the definition of the word organ is not made clear.
