Hydro Crews continue to work around the clock to restore power to thousands of people who began Boxing Day either at home in the cold and the dark, or in a warming shelter, a hotel room, or with friends or relatives.

Tanya Bruckmueller of Toronto Hydro says about 54-thousand of their customers still don’t have power as of early Thursday morning.

It’s a big improvement from the high of about 300-thousand cutomers, but there is a fresh layer of snow in Toronto that could complicate the work being done by Hydro crews.

Bruckmueller says many trees are still heavy with ice on the branches, and the new snow could mean more branches snapping, and falling on wires.

Meanwhile, authorities continue to caution against bringing gas-powered generators, barbecues or charcoal stoves into a residence in order to cook or keep warm.

Toronto EMS has seen an increase in people suffering from symptoms of  carbon monoxide poisoning.  Two people died from it on Monday in Newcastle, Ontario from using a gas generator in a garage.
