Pope Benedict played the part of Santa Claus, in granting his former butler a Christmas pardon.
He forgave Paolo Gabriele in person for stealing and leaking private papers.
After a jailhouse meeting, the 46-year-old Gabriele was freed and returned to his Vatican City apartment.
But officials say Gabriele won’t be able to continue living or working in the Vatican.
