This Sunday (March 4th) marks the 90th annual Academy Awards presentation – and I’m excited about the first of a 2-part series I’m launching this weekend, saluting music from the movies. This Sunday I’ll spotlight over a dozen of the all-time best Oscar-winning songs, from the very first one in 1934 to the most recent one just last year, and one from each decade in between. It’ll feel like a one-hour ride through the past, from the dancing feet of Fred and Ginger, to Judy’s red slippers, Patrick Swayze’s triumphant lift in ‘Dirty Dancing’ and the dance among the stars above La La Land.
So – are you a big movie fan ? I am. Every year Trudy and I try to catch all the major contenders, and on Oscar night, of course we’ll compare our predictions with the show winners. This year, I’m guessing ‘Shape of Water’ will win the big one. The Academy Awards is a show I’ve watched every year since I was a kid … remember that silly streaker running behind David Niven? Remember the amazing hosting work Billy Crystal used to do? So many memories, so many movies !
I’ll also salute the person with the most Oscar wins of all – take a guess who that might be, and tune in just after 3 for the answer. I’ll also have a 70th birthday salute to Marc Jordan – a good friend of Zoomer Radio, and husband to Amy Sky. Finally – it’s Toronto’s own birthday coming up – we were established March 6th, 1834, and I’ll play you a bunch of terrific songs about our town. And, yes there are quite a few good ones.
Oh, finally – I mentioned this was the first of a 2-part series. Next weekend, I’ll spotlight Movie songs that may not have won Oscars, but have left an indelible mark on films, and music, nevertheless. But, first things first – tune in for my Oscar Winners Edition THIS Sunday.
Thanks and Cheers – Gene.
