A Look Back at 2018 with Gene Stevens on “Vintage Favourites”

And so another year winds to its end … it’s been my pleasure and privilege to present 52 new editions of ‘Vintage Favourites’ during 2018. And I hope you had the chance to hear several of them. As every year, we covered a lot of ground, and played a lot of great music. Our main theme was ‘music genres’, and we explored many shades of ‘popular music’ from the swing and retro-swing sounds, to rhythm & blues, soul, doo wop, disco and jazz-pop … the roots of rock’n’roll, rockabilly, surf rock, folk-rock and hard rock … country crossovers to Broadway songs and the Great American Songbook, novelty songs and even baseball songs. But all that’s in the past – joining several hundred other shows we’ve done in almost a dozen years of ‘Vintage Favourites’.

I’m looking forward to a most exciting 2019 and a whole new batch of musical adventures to share with you. There’ll be major anniversary shows for Woodstock and ‘The Day The Music Died’; 100th anniversary salutes to Pete Seeger and Nat King Cole, major milestone birthday celebrations for Diana Ross, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and Bryan Adams and the 65th anniversaries of two landmark rock’n’roll classics: ‘Rock Around the Clock’ and ‘That’s All Right’. And almost every Sunday, we’ll spotlight a famous band, as we go from A to Z, from ABBA to Zombies.

But we have one more program for 2018. And it’s been our annual tradition for many years, to make a final salute to those we lost in the past twelve months. This year saw the passing of a Moody Blue and a Bay City Roller, a Temptation and a founding member of Jefferson Airplane/Starship … legends like Vic Damone and Charles Aznavour, one-hit wonders like Tab Hunter and Hugh Masekela … and of course the incomparable Queen of Soul – Aretha Franklin. I’ll salute all of them, and several more, in our year-ending ‘In Memoriam’ – this Sunday starting at 2:00pm. – on Zoomer Radio.

Thank you for listening to ‘Vintage Favourites’ – and my sincere wishes for you to have a wonderful new year. Cheers !
