The Russian opera superstar dubbed the ‘Elvis of Opera’ and “The Silver Fox” has died of brain cancer at the age of 55. Baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky passed away in this morning in hospital in London, England.
Hvorostovsky had cancelled all performances after a brain tumour seriously affected his sense of balance.  He made his final appearance, earlier this year, at the Russian ambassador’s residence in London where he sang arias by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.
Hvorostovsky came to international prominence in 1989 when he won the Cardiff Singer of the World competition.  He went on to sing at virtually every major opera house, including the Met, the Royal Opera House and La Scala Milan
Dimitri Hvorostovsky was 55.
