An emergency meeting by Ottawa City Council has heard from Police Chief Peter Sloly, who says he needs nearly 2,000 more officers and civilians to ”turn up the heat” on the ongoing truckers protest in the capital’s downtown.
That would almost double the 2,100 officers and civilians the police service currently employs.
Mayor Jim Watson says he’ll make the request of the Ontario and federal governments.
He adds a change to the officers’ collective agreement will allow officers to work without any days off during the ”occupation.”
The city is also asking Queen’s Park to increase fines for idling from $100 to $1,000, the fine for blocking a road from $350 to $1,000, and the noise bylaw fine from $490 to $1,000.
The mayor says the incessant honking is ”tantamount to psychological warfare.”
