Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer says unvaccinated people are eight times more likely to become infected with COVID-19, almost 30 times more likely to end up in hospital and 50 times more likely to need ICU care.
Dr. Kieran Moore says there are currently 300 in hospital with COVID-19 and 156 require ICU care.
“It bothers me deeply that these individuals haven’t taken advantage of immunization to protect them and I think over the next several weeks, we have to make a decision as a society to embrace prevention as the key strategy,” said Dr. Moore. “We can build more intensive care units or we can immunize to prevent illness.”
With a growing number of provinces mandating vaccine passports for entry to certain activities and venues, Ontario continues to reject the policy, passing the responsibility onto the private sector. He suggests all that’s needed is a screenshot or pdf of your vaccine receipt.
Dr. Moore says if vaccination rates climb higher than the current 75 percent of two doses, the province could avoid future waves and move away from public health measures within six-to-eight months.
