In a story that has taken an unexpected twist, actor Jussie Smollett has gone from a victim to a criminal.

 Smollett, one of the stars of the show Empire, turned himself into police Thursday, admitting to hiring two brothers to stage a fake attack on him January 29. He even gave them specific slurs to yell, while having them shout “MAGA country” and to drape a rope around his neck. Authorities claim  he faked his assault because he was unhappy with his salary.

Smollett was charged with disorderly conduct and filing a false police report. He was  released after posting $100,000 bail and is due back in court March 14.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson says he hopes “the truth about what happened receives the same amount of attention that the hoax did.”
