Two-thirds of Toronto residents feel the city’s streets are not safe for cyclists.

A new Forum Research poll also finds that half of those surveyed who are aware of Vision Zero think the plan is not doing enough to protect vulnerable users. And only a third of respondents have actually even heard of Vision Zero, despite it’s heavy coverage in the media and a recent decision by Toronto city council to increase spending on the program to $109-million over five years. The goal of Vision Zero is to completely eliminate traffic deaths by 2021.

Four cyclists died in Toronto in the first half of 2018, the same number who were killed in all of last year.

Toronto lags behind other cities when it comes to building cycling infrastructure. Montreal’s network of cycling paths is nearly 850 kilometres long, while as of November, Toronto had 643 kilometres of routes, nearly half of which consist merely of signed routes with no pavement markings.
