Residents of Hawaii are waking up today dealing with the anxiety from yesterday’s false warning of an incoming ballistic missile. The mistaken state of emergency lasted nearly 40 minutes before notice of a false alarm went out to cellphones. Today officials issued an apology and promise to investigate what went wrong. The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency says the error happened when someone hit the wrong button. The Agency tweeted there was no threat about 10 minutes after the initial alert, but that update didn’t reach people on the social media platform. In fact, a mobile alert informing of the false alarm didn’t reach cellphones until about 40 minutes later. Hawaii Senator Maixie Hirono says the alert system needs better protection against false alarms.
