The man who gave the world the most recognizable character in film history has died.
John Mollo won an Academy Award for designing the costumes for the original “Star Wars” characters and his representation of “Darth Vader” is considered by IMDB the most recognizable in movie history.
Mollo also won an Oscar for the historical epic “Gandhi.”
He had worked as a military expert for such films as “The Charge of the Light Brigade,” “Nicholas and Alexandra,” and Stanley Kubrick’s “Barry Lyndon.  At the time he met George Lucas to discuss “Star Wars,” he admitted he had never watched a science fiction film.
John Mollo died in London at the age of 86.
