It’s not often we see a hockey star who was born in San Francisco, California and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, but we could be seeing a lot more of one if the Toronto Maple Leafs pick him first overall in the June NHL draft.
The Leafs can do that because on Saturday night they won the number-one spot in the Draft Lottery.
It’s expected they’ll choose California-born and Arizona-raised Auston Matthews. He’s a 6-foot-2 centre who’s described as a complete package. Matthews has international experience, playing for the U-S in the World Junior Championships, and this past season he played professionally in the Swiss National League.
The last time the Maple Leafs had the first overall pick was in 1985 when they selected Wendel Clark from the Saskatoon Blades.
