The former Harper government is being criticized in the latest report from the auditor general.
AG Michael Ferguson
Michael Ferguson has found massive delays processing Canada Pension Plan disability payments have left some Canadians waiting years for benefits.
The average wait time is nearly 900 days for the Social Security Tribunal to decide on appeals.
The backlog of cases waiting for an appeal has nearly doubled since the tribunal’s creation after the 2012 federal budget to December 2014.
And the average wait time for an appeal decision has grown to 884 days, more than doubling the wait time prior to the tribunal’s creation.
The Department of Employment and Social Development’s service standard calls for a decision on disability cases within 120 days.
The Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, Jean-Yves Duclos, says he’s instructed his department to reform and accelerate the process for those facing an average wait time of more than 900 days.
Hamilton Centre NDP MP David Christopherson calls the tribunal ”a complete disaster … and quite frankly, they’re being jerked around by the government.”
