It’s not the best news for Prime Minister Stephen Harper ahead of an expected election call this weekend.

A new CTV News poll reveals that two in three respondents agree it is “time for a change in government”.  The survey also shows that Stephen Harper’s position as the leader most trusted to manage the economy has fallen 10 points since 2009.  He is now tied at 31 percent with NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, while Liberal leader Justin Trudeau lags far behind at 18 percent.

Harper told Bloomberg TV  yesterday, he’s urging Canadians to remain focused on the strong track record of the governing Conservatives.

“The choice is really very clear,” Harper explained, “are we going to stay on the path that has assured until now and according to all projections continues to assure Canada leads the developed world in terms of job growth, income growth and economic growth, or will we get into the kind of high debt, reckless spending, high tax policies that are jeopardizing the economies of so much of the world.”

Here in Ontario, the poll says Stephen Harper still has the edge among voters.  34 percent choose him, compared with 27 percent who pick Mulcair, and 22 percent who opt for Trudeau.

The fixed date for the federal election is October 19th.
