As of Monday, 100 front line Toronto police officers will be recording interactions with the public while investigating or collecting information. A year-long pilot project begins next week as a result of the recommendations coming from the Sammy Yatim shooting in 2013. Yatim was shot and killed aboard a TTC streetcar in a confrontation with police that was recorded by citizens using their cell phones. The Toronto Police Association is taking a wait and see position before deciding whether to support the cameras which will be turned off during casual conversations with the public. At the end of the 12 month pilot project, Toronto Police will analyze the effectiveness of the cameras and make further recommendations to Chief Mark Saunders .
