You know spring has arrived when the Great Lakes shipping season opens. Today the Toronto Port Authority will be hosting the 153rd annual Port of Toronto “Beaver Hat” Ceremony to mark the opening of the 2014 shipping season. The ceremony is a tradition dating back to 1861 and welcomes the arrival of the first vessel for the shipping season into the Port of Toronto. The ceremony is taking place aboard the “M/V Lubie.” Captain Jacek Kurpiel is being crowned with the nearly 200-year-old silk and beaver top hat by Port of Toronto Harbour Master Angus Armstrong
