Renowned Canadian author Mavis Gallant has died – at her apartment in Paris.

The Montrael born author first gained recognition by writing stories in American publications such as the New Yorker. The first of her more than 100 New Yorker stories appeared in 1951.

Gallant was the author of two novels, a play, and several collections of short stories. One collection, “Home Truths,” won the Governor-General’s literary award.

Although she was fluently bilingual and lived in Paris for the past 50 years, Gallant never wrote in French. She said English was “the language of her imagination.”

Mavis Gallant was 91.
