The CRTC has renewed the license for Zoomer Media’s Vision TV for 7 years and it has come out with a long-awaited decision that will affect what services you get in your basic cable and satellite package. Twenty–two channels, applied for mandatory carriage on basic cable. Some, like Zoomer Media’s Vision TV, were already offered this way, a privilege granted because of the unique service to Canada’s diverse religious and ethnic communities to the older demographic. Others, like the money-losing Sun TV, were looking for a new order for basic distribution. Canada’s broadcast regulator denied all but a few requests, including APTN, the aboriginal people network, the parliamentary channel and services geared to the visually impaired and francophone minorities.
Zoomer Media Founder Moses Znaimer says the decision should not affect the channel’s revenue numbers. He wants to thank the 16,000 plus Canadians who wrote, emailed and phoned in support. He wants to assure them that Vision TV will remain in their basic packages, because of renewal agreements that are in place or in process. Although the CRTC denied Vision’s application, it had a message for cable and satellite companies: that changes to Vision’s placement or packaging, would be a problem for the regulator. As for the controversial and unprofitable Sun TV, it’s future is now in doubt.
