Premier Kathleen Wynne has fired the head of Ontario Lottery and Gaming.
Paul Godfrey was brought in by the McGuinty government to streamline OLG and increase its revenue. And, by all accounts, he was succeeding. But he and Wynne didn’t see eye-to-eye on a number of issues — primarily giving Toronto a special deal in exchange for hosting a casino.
Wynne overturned Godfrey’s offer to Toronto. But Godfrey says giving Toronto a special break on a casino is not precedent-setting. He says Toronto gets money for transit that cities such as Ottawa and London don’t get.
Godfrey also says it’s apparent that Wynne is uncomfortable with the whole idea of gambling.
Mayor Rob Ford has cancelled next Tuesday’s special debate on a casino because of the lower revenue projections. He says there is no point in putting council through a divisive debate if a casino doesn’t produce the revenue the city was promised.
