Today’s the day Research in Motion unveils its future.

RIM will introduce its new smartphones and operating system in New York this morning.

The Waterloo company is holding a splashy event in Manhattan to usher in the new devices that were originally due for release last year.

It hopes the Blackberry 10 will enable RIM to regain some ground in the highly-competitive smartphone market the company once dominated.

RIM says the new BlackBerry 10 will be released first in a touchscreen version, while a keypad alternative will follow in weeks or months.

Research in Motion has a lot of ground to make up. One study in the US last year found the Blackberry’s share of the market dropped from five per cent to one per cent. Apple’s share was 64 per cent.
