The flu has hit Toronto with a vengeance this season.

Public Health officials have confirmed 720 cases of influenza this season. Last year at this time, there were 20.

Toronto Associate Medical Officer of Health Dr. Irene Armstrong says the flu can be unpredictable. She says last year flu season peaked late and was very mild. This year it’s peaking early.

But she says it’s not too late to get a flu shot. Armstrong says the strains of flu showing up this year are contained in the vaccine, so it can offer good protection.

The city has added some free vaccination clinics this week. You can find details online at www.toronto.ca/health.

The spike in confirmed flu cases comes as federal government deals with a shortage of flu vaccine. Ottawa is releasing supplies from an emergency stockpile to make sure there is enough vaccine to go around.
