The Federal government is acting on concerns about the treatment of elderly war veterans at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
Several family members have complained their frail loved ones have been neglected or forced to endure unsanitary conditions at Canada’s largest veterans’ facility.
A spokesman for Veterans Affairs Minister Steven Blaney says he’s immediately sending a senior official to Sunnybrook to investigate the claims.
Doctor Jocelyn Charles is Sunnybrook’s Medical Director. She says the Toronto hospital takes all complaints seriously. “We do our best to feed everybody in a timely manner”, she explained, “and when we are aware of any delays, we look at what were the systems issues and is there an improvement we can make. Our goal here is for every veteran to get the best care possible.”
Sunnybrook’s Veterans’ Care Facility provides long term and complex hospital care to 500 veterans of the Second World War and the Korean War.
