12:15 pm ET | Dr. Zachary Levine

GUEST – Dr. Zach, GFB House Doctor, Assistant Professor, Faculty of Medicine at McGill University

TOPIC – Kidney and gall bladder stones, kidney and liver disease

INFO – The topic will be kidney and gallbladder stones primarily, and we will touch on other kidney and gallbladder issues if people want. As an introduction, the kidney is an important organ which removes waste from the blood and creates urine. One in 3 people will experience kidney stones in their lifetime. It is more common in women and in those with a family history, and diabetes. Stones can cause severe pain in the back and abdomen, along with nausea and vomiting. The majority will pass without intervention aside from pain control, but some require treatment. We will discuss the signs and symptoms and when you need to worry.

The gallbladder houses bile which is used to aid in the digestion of fats. Stones may form in the gallbladder which may cause upper abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. While stones often pass with only pain control, sometimes they need other treatments, and removal of the gallbladder is a consideration. Also, if a stone gets stuck it can lead to a dangerous infection called cholangitis. We will discuss the signs and symptoms of gallstone disease and what can be done about it.
