TOPIC – Cancer screening
INFO – The point of a screening test is to detect cancer early, before it is symptomatic, in order to maximize the chances of cure. A good screening test would be sensitive, finding the disease even when it has just started. And a good test also should be harmless to the person being screened. A number of effective screening tests exist, including for cervical and colon cancer. Other screening tests are more controversial, including those for breast and prostate cancer. And there are some cancers for which there still are no good screening tests, such as ovarian and lung cancer. We will discuss the current evidence and recommendations for which screening test is worthwhile for you.
